Teens allowed to drink more likely to became alcohol abusers

LONDON, U.K. – A new study suggests that teenagers whose parents let them have the odd glass of wine or beer are more likely to abuse alcohol before they reach adulthood.

Researchers in both the U.S. and Australia looked at more than 1,900 12 and 13 year olds.

The study found that those allowed to have a supervised drink were more likely to get into drunken fights or suffer alcohol-induced blackouts within a few years than those whose parents stress zero tolerance for booze.

According to the study’s lead author, the results suggest that parents should be parents, and not their children’s drinking buddies.
