VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – No shortage of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators both hold practices today in preparation for tomorrow’s second game of their NHL Western Conference semi-final (6 p.m.). The Canucks took the opener last night, 1-0. Roberto Luongo faced only 20 shots while Nashville’s Pekka Rinne arguably had the toughest night in net, facing 30 shots and making some brilliant saves.

This series now includes two coach of the year nominees. Both Vancouver’s Alain Vigneault and Nashville’s Barry Trotz have been named finalists for the NHL’s Jack Adams Trophy.

Vigneault led the Canucks to their first Presidents’ Trophy as the National Hockey League’s top team while Trotz, the only coach that Nashville has had, led his team to their first-ever playoff series victory.  Pittsburgh’s Dan Bylsma is also up for the award.

The winner will be announced at the NHL’s Awards Banquet in Las Vegas on June 22th.

AHL

The Canucks’ Manitoba Moose farm team resume their American Hockey League North Division Final in Hamilton Sunday at noon. The Bulldogs took game one 4-1 last night before a sparse crowd of 1927 at Hamilton’s Copps Coliseum. Alex Bolduc scored the only goal for Manitoba.

MLS

Vancouver Whitecaps FC make their first trip to the Ohio capital for a game against the Columbus Crew tomorrow. The Whitecaps registered their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over 2012 MLS expansion club Montreal Impact in the first leg of their NCC semifinal series on Wednesday night. Whitecaps record in Major League Soccer is 1-3-3.

Columbus will be a challenge as the Crew has gone unbeaten in its last five games after losing their opener to D.C. United.  Vancouver beat Columbus 2-1 in a preseason friendly back on February 8th during their spring training sessions in Phoenix, Arizona. Game time Saturday is 4:30 p.m. Catch all the action on Rogers Sportsnet One.

VANCOUVER MARATHON

The 40th Vancouver Marathon will be run this Sunday in downtown Vancouver.

The BMO Vancouver Marathon is one of Canada’s largest races and has had participation from 41 countries since  its inaugural year in 1972. The original 1972 “British Columbia Marathon” course went around Stanley Park five times. There were 46 entrants.
