ICBC may factor speeding tickets into insurance rates

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Winding your car up to a 110 km/h and getting caught could soon mean a higher price tag for auto insurance in this province. ICBC’s new proposed plan would see you dinged you for a simple speeding ticket.

No longer will it be enough to go accident-free for a year in order to get rewarded with a five per cent discount on your insurance. The new model ICBC is considering would consider the speeding tickets and traffic no-nos you add up.

On Vancouver streets, some drivers hate it — others love it.

“I think that’s great,” says one man. “I’ve been driving 44 years without a speeding ticket. Behaviour is insurance; that’s what it’s based on.”

The proposal is part of some big changes coming to ICBC. The insurance provider still insists customers with good driving records can expect lower rates.
