Manny Malhotra is back skating

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks did not have a team skate Wednesday but there was at least one Canuck drawing attention for his short on-ice workout.  Forward Manny Malhotra, who hasn’t played since he was hit in the eye by a puck in a game against Colorado in March, skated for a short time by himself wearing a full face-cage to protect the eye that required surgery following the accident.

Malhotra will still not play again this season and it is still uncertain if he can compete again at the NHL level but he has been a big part of the Canucks’ playoff run.  Assistant coach Rick Bowness has confirmed that Malhotra has been travelling with the team and helping out at the coaches’ meetings. He says that Malhotra has a great rapport with the coaches and players and that he has been a big help in advising the players at their penalty-killing meetings.

The Canucks’ third-line centre who was one of the NHL’s top faceoff men at the time of the accident was struck by a deflected puck in the second period against Colorado March 16 and underwent a procedure following the game.  Malhotra issued a statement in early April saying that he is “optimistic for a good outcome.”  In the meantime he will travel with his teammates and  help out where he can.
