Whitecaps host San Jose tonight

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Soccer will be on at Empire Field tonight as the Whitecaps play host to San Jose in MLS action.

Vancouver is trying to snap an eight-game winless streak. They did collect their first road point with a 0-0 draw in Chicago over the weekend.

‘Caps head coach Teitur Thordarson is hoping captain Jay DeMerit can play some minutes tonight. The United States International is very close to recovering from a groin injury that has restricted him to just two starts this season. While DeMerit’s return will be welcome, Thordarson is unlikely to rush the former Watford FC defender back into action.

Vancouver will be without striker Atiba Harris (knee) and midfielder John Thorrington (calf) for the midweek contest versus San Jose. Midfielder Michael Nanchoff (groin) is listed as questionable.

Both teams have just one win apiece and are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings; San Jose is dead last, two points behind Vancouver.

Though this is the first competitive meeting between Whitecaps FC and the Earthquakes, both clubs met in friendly action when Vancouver was a North American second division club. The ‘Caps lost 3-1 to San Jose Clash in Abbotsford on June 14, 1998 before falling to the re-named Earthquakes 3-1 at Swangard Stadium on August 14, 2001.
