Canada knocked out of World Hockey Championship

BRATISLAVA, SL. (NEWS1130) – Canada will not return with a medal from the World Hockey Championships in Slovakia.  Alexei Kaigorodov and Ilya Kovalchuck scored 3:12 apart in the third period as Russia rallied to edge Canada 2-1 in quarter-final action.

Canada took a 1-0 lead into the third period on a goal by Ottawa Senator’s forward Jason Spezza but gave up a back-breaking shorthanded goal that tied the game.  New Jersey Devils forward Kovalchuk would score from the deep slot past Jonathan Bernier to put the Russians ahead.

Canada’s roster included Maple Ridge’s Andrew Ladd and Vancouver’s Evander Kane of the Atlanta Thrashers.  Ladd was the victim of a hit-from-behind by Russia’s Yevgeni Artyukhin in what became a rough hockey game.

Canada has not beaten Russia at the World Hockey Championship since 2005 and has earned medals in six of the past eight tournaments.  The Russians move on to play Finland in the semi-finals.  Finland defeated Norway today 4-1.
