News1130 Sports weekend round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of local sports happening over the May long weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks move the NHL Western Conference Final to San Jose’s HP Pavillion for Game Three tonight. The Canucks have a 2-0 series lead after taking both meetings at Rogers Arena. Vancouver is 5-1 in their last six games while San Jose has just one win in their last six.

The Canucks took both meetings this season in San Jose, but hadn’t won in Northern California since 2007 before this year.

The Canucks will make at least one roster change for tonight’s game, with the addition of forward Alex Bolduc who spent most of the regular season with the Manitoba Moose farm team. Bolduc will replace Cody Hodgson as centre on the Canuck’s fourth line. It will be Bolduc’s NHL playoff debut.

Bolduc’s addition will likely add a little grit to the lineup for what could be a physical game after Wednesday’s Game Two turned rough.

Sharks fourth-line forward Ben Eager was the biggest violator for San Jose, committing four minor penalties and a misconduct in the final 21 minutes of the game. Canucks’ coach Alain Vigneault was also upset Eager escaped suspension by the NHL, despite running Daniel Sedin into the boards in the later stages of Wednesday’s game.

Faceoff tonight is 6 p.m.

MLS

The Vancouver Whitecaps get a rare weekend off and will return to the pitch next Wednesay when they visit Toronto FC to complete their Canadian Nutrilite Championship Final. Vancouver and Toronto drew at one on Wednesday in the opener of the total-goal aggregate series.

The Whitecaps now must outscore Toronto to advance to the CONCACAF round. Game time on Wednesday is 5 p.m.

W-LEAGUE

The Women’s Whitecaps play their home opener with the Seattle Sounders Sunday afternoon at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam. Vancouver is 1-0 after beating expansion Victoria 2-0 last Sunday in Langford. Game time on Sunday is 4 p.m.

RODEO

The annual Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair goes this weekend. The world’s top cowboys return to the Cloverdale Fair Grounds for the May long weekend tradition. The first events are tonight at 7:30 p.m.

This year features Roughstock Rodeo Events (Bareback, Saddle Bronc & Bull Riding) and Ladies Barrel Racing. The top 24 pro rodeo contestants in each event are invited to participate this weekend.

THOROUGHBRED RACING

Hastings Racecourse has three days of thoroughbred horse racing this long weekend. There is no racing tonight but full cards are scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday. Post-time Saturday is 1:20 p.m.
