Kootenay breaks the ice at the Memorial Cup

MISSISSAUGA,ON (NEWS1130) – The Kootenay Ice play their first game of the Memorial Cup this afternoon and the team will be in tough against the OHL champion Owen Sound Attack.

Kootenay enters the tournament winning 15 of its last 16 playoff games and are led by BC boys Max Reinhart out of Hollyburn and goaltender Nathan Lieuwen from Abbotsford.  Reinhart was second in WHL playoff scoring with 27 points, while Lieuwen was the league’s top goalie in the post-season, posting a 2.24 goals against average and .923 save percentage with three shutouts.

Owen Sound won the OHL title defeating the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in a dramatic game seven overtime win.  Forward Robby Mignardi and Colorado Avalanche prospect Joey Hishon led the Attack in scoring in the OHL playoffs, both boasting 24 points.  Mignardi was named the OHL post-season MVP after scoring eight of his 15 goals on the power play.

The Ice are in their third Memorial Cup tournament, winning the tournament back in 2002.  For Owen Sound, this is the franchise’s first trip to the CHL championship.
