CALGARY (NEWS1130) – Hockey Canada has announced that  Vancouver Giants head coach Don Hay will be head coach of Canada’s National Junior Team for the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship. The 57-year-old Hay will step behind the bench of Canada’s National Junior Team for the first time since he guided Canada to the gold at the 1995 tournament.

Hay, a two-time Western Hockey League coach of the year, is one of just five WHL coaches to have 500 regular season victories.  He has also won three WHL Championships and three Memorial Cups (1994 and 1995 with Kamloops, 2007 with Vancouver).  His assistant coaches will include Kelowna Rockets head coach Ryan Huska.

The tournament was held in Red Deer, Alberta when Hay guided Canada to Gold and their first perfect record at the event.  The tournament returns to Alberta this time.  The World Junior Championship will begin Boxing Day with games to be played in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.
