Target begins to convert Zellers sites in Canada

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Target has signed leases on 105 locations across Canada. It’s the first wave in its conversion of Zellers sites it bought from the Hudson’s Bay Company.

The US-based discount retailer says 15 of the stores are in BC, including Metrotown, Oakridge, Coquitlam Centre, Willowbrook, Haney Place, Scottsdale, and Abbotsford. In the coming days, it will pay half of the $1.8 billion purchase price of the deal to buy 220 Zellers leases from HBC.

President Tony Fisher plans to begin opening the stores under the Target banner in early 2013. He says most of the 105 locations would be converted to Target, but others may be leased to different retailers or given back to the landlords.

More locations will be announced in September.
