Expect an influx of bikes over the next week or so

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Our roads are about to get a lot more competitive, with Critical Mass tonight and Bike to Work Week starting Monday. What happens when two modes of transportation collide?

Adam Grossman with ICBC tells us most crashes involve side swiping; when both parties aren’t giving each other enough space on the street.

“The number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities has stayed fairly consistent over the last few years but it is still a number that is too high,” he explains. “There are about 1,300 crashes, 1,400 injuries, and 10 fatalities involving cyclists each year in BC.”

So, is it time to start thinking about insurance for those cyclists?

“It will be a question for government if we were directed to do so but there is no idea that that is coming,” says Grossman. “It is a question that is asked every now and then, but it is currently not mandated within our company.”
