Minors now banned from tanning in N.S.

By

A new law now in effect in Nova Scotia makes it illegal for teens to tan.

As of May 31, anyone under the age of 19 is prohibited from using a tanning bed.

The law is a response to climbing cancer rates in Nova Scotia, which are among the highest in the country. In a release, the province quotes studies showing  indoor tanning before age 35 raises the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent.

The ban will be phased in over the next few months and inspectors will be visiting tanning salons in the fall to ensure everyone’s following the new rules.

A 1-800 number will also be set up so citizens can report anyone who’s violating the law.

Fines for offenders start at $2000.
