Burnaby School District tweaks anti-bullying policy

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A controversial anti-bullying policy proposed to protect gay students will be changed by Burnaby’s school district, but it doesn’t appear like there will be much of a change.

Trustees wouldn’t let media see the new draft policy but say it has a new title, some wording around homophobia and heterosexism has changed, and it apparently clarifies how it fits in with education ministry guidelines.

Trustee Ron Burton doesn’t see it as making concessions.

“When you do a draft policy, it’s in the rough state and often you make improvements along the way and that’s the way we see this, making improvements,” says Burton.

Some parents raised concerns about things like age appropriateness and religious conflict.

Trustee Larry Hayes says they heard a lot of public and expert feedback.

“Those that supported fully, those that did not support fully, and a lot of people in-between.”

The board votes on the policy June 14th.
