CRTC to decide on metered billing over set Internet limit

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’re using a lot of wireless memory to send out those Canucks game texts and tweets. And wireless companies are waiting to see if they can bill you for all of the power you’re using.

All of those game-time calls, messages, and photos have to be powered by something — and Telus has brought in portable bandwidth support to help.

SFU communications guru Peter Chow-White says the CRTC will soon rule if big wireless companies can use usage-based billing. “Over and above a certain ceiling of use you would be metered in your Internet usage.”

“They want to turn our model from a flat service — which is what the culture of the Internet in Canada and North America is… into a metered service,” he explains. “And what this is going to do is it’s going to kill innovation in Canada.”

He says hundreds of thousands of Canadians petitioned Ottawa to get the CRTC to reconsider metered billing at first.
