Canucks one win away from lifting the Cup

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Maxim Lapierre’s goal four-and-a-half minutes into the third period lifted the Canucks to a 1-0 win in Game 5 over Boston. Roberto Luongo turned aside 31 shots to earn the shutout.

It was Lapierre’s second goal of the post-season.

Luongo was also in goal for the 1-0 shutout in Game 1.  At the other end, Tim Thomas stopped 165 of 171 Vancouver shots in the series.

The home team has won each game.  The three contests played at Rogers Arena have all been one goal victories for Vancouver.

Canucks rookie defenceman Chris Tanev made his debut in the series, logging just over a dozen minutes.  He replaced Keith Ballard.

Vancouver leads the series 3-2, with Game 6 in Boston.  The Stanley Cup will be in the TD Garden on Monday.

Fans love the performance

There were huge celebrations in downtown Vancouver after the win, as tens of thousands of people celebrated the Game 5 victory.

Live viewing sites, bars, and restaurants were packed to capacity for the game and after the win fans poured into the street, cheering, celebrating, and hoisting homemade Stanley Cups.

Vancouver Police say there were some minor issues, but overall the crowd was good natured. Friday’s crowd was the biggest so far in this series.

In Whalley, Canucks fan Dennis tells News1130 he liked what he saw on the ice, and can’t wait for Monday night. “Forget about the crowd. Just focus. Play your game. You’ll do alright. The cup is coming to Vancouver.”

Fans were also partying in the streets, waving flags, and honking horns in Surrey and Abbotsford.

After those two disastrous games in Boston, Premier Christy Clark Tweeted on Friday night that the Olympic cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza will no longer be lit for away games.
