Riders cycle to conquer cancer

TORONTO, On. – United by the common cause of battling cancer, nearly 5,000 cyclists have set out on a two-day ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls, Saturday.

The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer event raises money for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The ride offered multiple distance options to encourage participation: the M200 Classic Double-Century (200 miles), or the K200 Metric Double-Century (200 kilometres).

Both rides will push cyclists to their limit; but Steve Merker with the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation said it doesn’t compare to the struggle of living with cancer.

“Compared to the cancer that people have to go through and chemotherapy – all the issues that you deal with when you’re battling cancer, you know riding 200 miles or 200 kilometres to Niagara Falls is really nothing.”

The event kicked off at the CNE around 8 a.m., resulting in a temporary partial closure of Lake Shore Boulevard to Windermere Avenue.

Just as they were setting out, riders were given the inspirational news that they raised $17.5-million for cancer research this year, topping last year’s figure by more than $1-million.

Riders will cross the finish line in Niagara Falls Sunday night.
