Soccer rivalry renewed in Seattle

By

SEATTLE, WA. (NEWS1130) – Whitecaps FC and the Seattle Sounders FC face-off in the Emerald City for the first meeting between the two teams in the Cascadia Cup derby.

With Vancouver and the Portland Timbers now members of the MLS, this year marks the first time since 2008 the fan-based Cascadia Cup returns to its original three-team format, which started in 2004 between the ‘Caps, Timbers, and Sounders.

Vancouver is in the midst of a 13-game winless streak and are hitting Qwest Field for the first time in MLS play.  The team will have striker Eric Hassli back in the line-up. The French striker missed last weekend’s match with Real Salt Lake.  He got his third red card of the season in the Whitecaps 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on June 1st.

The ‘Caps will also have centerback Michael Boxall and midfielder Nizar Khalfan back from international duty, but are still without midfielder Terry Dunfield.  He’s away playing for Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This evening’s match marks the 112th time Vancouver and Seattle have met in competitive play.  The teams faced-off in the pre-season with the ‘Caps taking the game 3-2.

Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.
