WHL franchise in Victoria unveils new name

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – They voted and they chose it. Fans have voted online to name the new Western Hockey League franchise in Victoria the Royals.

RG Properties, the owners of the Royals and operators of the Save-on-Foods Memorial Center where the team will play, unveiled the new nickname and uniforms on Monday.

The franchise was forced to go with an existing colour template for the new uniforms. Reebok, the jersey manufacturers, didn’t have enough time to customize a color scheme due to the short amount of time they had to come up with the uniforms. The Chilliwack Bruins moved from the Fraser Valley to Victoria in April.

The logo was designed by artist Brent Lynch of Nanoose Bay, B.C., who designed the Vancouver Canucks’ orca logo and the logo for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. It features a lion holding a hockey stick with a maple leaf on the lion’s arm.

The team will begin play in the WHL next season.
