Iconic restaurant and butcher re-opens

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The neon pigs have been restored and 70 neighbourhood employees have been hired.  Save-On-Meats, the iconic butcher shop and Hastings Street restaurant, expects to open for business tomorrow.

Owner Mark Brand says people in the neighbourhood can’t wait for him to open the doors.  “Every time I open that roller door, every person who walks by says, ‘When is it opening?  Is it still going to be the butcher?  Is the restaurant re-opening?’  And honestly, we haven’t had a single negative comment from anybody in the neighbourhood yet.”

The store will feature affordable healthy food, including $2 sandwiches that will cater to the needs of the neighbourhood.  “And cups of soup that are made in-house, so very healthy, it’s nothing out of a can.  What we’re trying to do there is make sure food security stays in tact on this block and the blocks around.”

Cheap eats will be subsidized by pricier sandwiches for that gourmet palate.

Brand’s work on the project is being filmed over 11 weeks for a documentary to be aired on OWN, Oprah’s network.  You can catch the doc next year.
