Back to work bill for Canada Post passes

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – After a marathon 58-hour debate, the House of Commons has passed legislation ordering locked-out Canada Post employees back to work.

The New Democrats staged an around-the-clock filibuster starting Thursday night that stalled the House of Commons, but the legislation finally passed Saturday night.

The bill had been introduced in response to the Crown corporation suspending operations following rotating strikes by its union.

Talks between the two sides had collapsed late Wednesday and union members blamed the bill for removing Canada Post’s will to negotiate.

The Conservatives say the law was necessary because the lockout was becoming a drain on the economy.
