Clinton says gay marriage approval in New York gives credibility, visibility to movement

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is celebrating the state of New York’s legalization of same-sex marriage as a historic human rights victory that will give much-needed credibility and visibility to the international movement for equality for gays and lesbians.
Speaking Monday to a gay pride event at the State Department, Clinton said that last week’s move in the state she represented in the Senate was a momentous and extraordinary event.
But she said much more needs to be done to end discrimination against homosexuals around the globe, a cause she has rallied American diplomats to embrace.
Clinton said the campaign for gay rights is “one of the most urgent and important human rights struggles of all times” and called for activists to redouble their efforts in the fight.
