Mail to start moving by tomorrow

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Not only is the cheque in the mail but it will actually get delivered this week, now that the lock out at Canada Post has been unlocked by Ottawa.

So what did it take to get the mail moving again?  Apparently an appearance by Labour Minister Lisa Raitt in the Senate did the trick.

“I’m grateful for the Senate, first of all, for sitting on a Sunday and getting this matter dealt with in the most efficient way, yet asking very difficult questions on the floor of the Senate,” says Raitt.

The Senate sat for most of the day yesterday, debating the legislation and putting the tough questions to the federal government.

“I was honoured to be able to appear on the floor of the Senate to discuss and talk about the bill with the Senators.  I answered their questions and then they took over their own process,” adds Raitt.

Now, the government will appoint a mediator who will have sole authority to resolve this dispute.  It is widely believed the postal workers will not get as good as a deal as the one they rejected in the final offer from Canada Post.

Unionized workers will be back at sorting centres today.  Letters should begin arriving in mailboxes tomorrow.
