Vancouver protestors head to Cuba with 100 tonnes of aid

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A caravan of 50 protestors from Vancouver and the U.S. are heading south tonight on the Washington interstate, on their way to deliver 100 tonnes of aid to Cuba.

The group will take about two weeks to get through the U.S. to Mexico, where donations of school and medical supplies will be placed on shipping containers bound for the communist island. The activists are raising awareness about a U.S. trade embargo that has been in place for almost 50 years.

“It goes to communities where things that are household supplies get distributed to the communities,” explains Janine Solanki of Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba. “It goes to cultural centres and sports equipment goes to schools.”

The group will hold events in 130 American cities on their way to Cuba, to educate people about their government’s policy.
