VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Finding out who’s getting married and who’s getting divorced is about to get a lot harder. Statistics Canada will no longer collect and crunch those numbers.
The decision was made during a strategic review of government spending. The national agency says relationships have also become more difficult to define.
StatsCan has been collecting information on marriages since 1921 and divorces since 1972. It released its last batch of figures last week. The change means we may never know how the recession affected marriage and divorce rates since tracking ended in 2008.
The move is expected to save $250,000 every year.
