News1130 Sports weekend round-up

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a busy weekend on the local sports scene, highlighted by some of the world’s top golfers playing in Vancouver and a cat fight between the Lions and Tiger-Cats tonight at Empire Field.

CFL

The BC Lions are back on the gridiron tonight to face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Tabbies have one win on the season while the Leos are still in search of their first victory.

Tiger-Cats offensive lineman Jason Jimenez could be a marked man. In last September’s game at Empire Field, Jimenez went after defensive end and former teammate Brent Johnson’s knee with a low block, well after a pass had been completed. There was no retribution from the Lions in the final week of the season, because they needed to win that final game in Hamilton to make the post-season.

Prior to tonight’s game, KISS bassist and front-man Gene Simmons will be on hand for the ceremonial coin toss at mid-field. Although, with the two teams that are playing, it might be more appropriate that drummers Peter Criss or Eric Singer handle the toss, because they wear the make-up of the Catman in KISS.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

CANADIAN OPEN GOLF

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Shaughnessy Golf Course is proving difficult for the top golfers in the world. The final two rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday. The last person to win the Canadian Open at the course was Mark Calcavecchia, who finished the tournament at five-under par in 2005.

This country was well-represented at our national open, as 17 golfers from Canada played in the first two rounds.

NORTHWEST LEAGUE BASEBALL

The Vancouver Canadians wrap up a three-game set in Eugene tomorrow night, before returning to Nat Bailey Stadium on Sunday to meet the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes for the first of three games.

First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

WHITECAPS FC

The MLS squad is off until Saturday July 30, when the LA Galaxy visit Empire Field.

The women will be in Santa Clarita, California on Sunday night for a 7 p.m. kick-off . Second-place Vancouver meets the first-place Blue Heat in the 2011 W-League Western Conference Final. It is the first time in seven tries that the Caps will be on the road for the Conference Final.

If Vancouver wins, they will  move on to the 2011 USL W-League Championship Final Four. That will be hosted by the Seattle Sounders women next weekend in Tukwila.
