BC Place open house draws over 10,000 curious fans

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Over 10,000 people turned out today for an open house at BC Place to see how the extensive renovations and new retractable roof are looking.

For most people the new retractable roof was a big hit, and a lot of fans also commented on the new, wider seats, which will come complete with cupholders.

“It’s awesome, I cannot wait to see it in place,” said one woman, mingling among the spectators.

“I’m going to like when they put the field in, it’s gonna look really cool,” said a male fan.

But not everyone was as impressed.

“I was perfectly happy with the floating roof we had before. A waste of $450 million,” one man told News1130.

David Podmore with PavCo, the company who owns and operates the stadium, says the overall positive response and enthusiasm show the public are behind the project.

“I’m the first one to admit, I think we’ve done a poor job getting the message out that this is a lot more than just a new roof, this is basically a brand new building,” he said.

Podmore insists the construction is on time and on budget.

The stadium officially opens Sept. 30 with a BC Lions game.
