VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

CFL

BC Lions try again for their first win of the CFL season tonight when they welcome the Saskatchewan Roughriders to Empire Field. The Lions (0-5) are coming off a tough 25-20 loss in Winnipeg last Thursday while the Roughriders (1-4) have been inconsistent. The Riders’ last game was a 22-18 home loss to Calgary last weekend.

This is the first of three meetings between the two teams and is already a critical game for both teams’ playoff hopes. The newest Lion, defensive back Tad Kornegay makes his  Lions debut against his former team.  Kornegay was released by the Riders two weeks ago.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

MLB

Langley’s Brett Lawrie will make his Major League Baseball debut tonight.  The Toronto Blue Jays recalled their top prospect from their Triple-A team in Las Vegas where he was hitting .353 with 18 home runs and 61 RBI.

The 21-year-old will make his debut at third base for the Blue Jays when they open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards tonight. Lawrie was originally scheduled for a call-up in May but that was put on hold when he injured his hand at the plate with Las Vegas.

MLS

Vancouver Whitecaps host the Chicago Fire on Sunday in Major League Soccer action at Empire Field.  The Caps (2W-11L-9D) have another good opportunity to win their third game of the season. The Chicago Fire (2W-6L-13D) has also had a terrible season.

The schedule could work in Vancouver’s favour. Chicago played just two nights ago, playing to a 1-1 home draw with the Philadelphia Union. Game time Sunday is 4 p.m.

Little League

The Canadian Little League Championship begins tomorrow in North Vancouver.  BC, represented by Langley faces host Mt. Seymour Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Chris Zuehlke Memorial Park.  The winner of the tournament represents Canada at the Little League World Series later this month in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Horse racing

There is no horse racing today at Hastings Racecourse. Action returns tomorrow and Sunday with post-time at 1:50 p.m.

Tennis

The 2011 Odlum Brown Vancouver Open continues today at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver. One of the feature matches tonight is on the mens’ side of the draw when Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil faces Moldova’s Roman Borvanov in the evening draw at centre court.
