Whitecaps set to face Fire at Empire Field

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Fire are prepared to renew rivalries at Empire Field. The two teams have met once previously as they battled to a 0-0 draw in May.

After being devastated at home last week, 4-0 against the LA Galaxy, the Whitecaps are hoping for a much better effort today. The ‘Caps haven’t won since they beat the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on June 18th.

There are some roster changes for the home side. The Whitecaps will have Omar Salgado back in the lineup after he missed the last match because he was playing for the USA U-18 squad at the 2011 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. John Thorrington is also expected to make his return from a calf injury that he’s been dealing with for most of the season.

The Fire will be lacking depth on defence as they’re missing Mike Banner, Cory Gibbs, and Steven Kinney to injury. Striker Diego Chaves is doubtful to make the start as well.

Since the two teams last met the Fire have struggled, going 1-3-9 in 13 matches. In their previous match they fought to a 1-1 draw at home against Philadelphia.

Game time is 4 p.m.
