Do narcissists make good bosses?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They believe in themselves, they’re dominant and authoritative; it’s only a matter of time before they’re running the show. But there’s a reason some of those bosses really suck.

People often mistake narcissism for actual leadership qualities. Dutch research suggests narcissists climb the corporate ladder so easily because employees buy into the charisma and strong sense of self-belief.

But though they’re convincing, narcissists are so self-obsessed they can clamp down on communication and hold back others who might otherwise shine in the workplace.

Psychologists do say narcissists can be useful in times of crisis. They can can reduce stress when employees think a strong, dominant boss will take control — even if they don’t know what they’re doing.

The research is published in the Business Insider.
