Vancouver firefighters on a home safety blitz today

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you live in Vancouver, don’t be surprised if you get a visit from firefighters today.  The fire department is on a home safety check blitz.  It says with warmer weather comes more risk of accidental fires or maliciousness.

Firefighter Charles Mulder says fully geared-up colleagues armed with ID and a firetruck parked nearby will be checking for any hazards, like improperly stored gas cans or propane tanks.

“They’ll just do what we call a windshield survey, where they’ll look over your backyard or your front yard and say, ‘Okay, this house looks good.’  They’ll put a card in your house just saying that we were here.”

He says they’ll also check to make sure your landscaping is safe.  “It happens all the time where bushes will burn and catch the house on fire.”
