Another death rocks the NHL

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – Former NHL enforcer Wade Belak has been found dead in his Toronto condo. He was in Toronto to film the latest season of the CBC show “Battle of the Blades.”

The cause of his death has not been determined.

The 35-year-old Belak played 15 games last season for the Nashville Predators, finishing with 18 penalty minutes. He was placed on waivers by the club in February of this year. He retired shortly after clearing waivers unclaimed.

The Saskatoon native spent parts of 14 seasons in the NHL with Nashville, Toronto, Florida, Calgary and Colorado. He scored eight goals and added 25 assists, while racking up 1263 penalty minutes in 549 career games.

The Quebec Nordiques drafted Belak in the first round, 12th overall, at the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The news comes on the heels of the recent deaths of New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard and former Canucks forward Rick Rypien.
