News1130 Sports weekend round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

CFL

The BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts kick off Week 10 of the CFL tonight at Rogers Centre in Toronto.  The Lions are coming off a bye week and a 36-1 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos. This is a battle between two 2-6 teams and they will meet again in the rematch at Empire Field next Saturday.

The Lions have not played well at Rogers Centre in recent years. Toronto picked off Lions quarterback Travis Lulay late in a 24-20 win over BC in July 2010. The game marks the return of Lions receiver Arland Bruce to Toronto where he played five seasons.

The Lions have won two of their last three outings and can move into control of third place in the West. The Argos can better their chances of securing the crossover playoff spot in the CFL.

Game time is 4:30 p.m.

CANADA WEST

The UBC Thunderbirds open up the Canada West football schedule tonight at Mosaic Stadium in Regina against the Regina Rams. The Thunderbirds were defeated by Menlo College 39-13 last Saturday and enter the game unranked. Regina defeated Manitoba 15-7 in a non-conference game last weekend

GNAC

The university football season begins for Simon Fraser University this weekend in Forest Grove, Oregon.  The Clansmen will try to improve on last year’s 1-9 debut in the NCAA’s Great Northwest Athletic conference.

SFU kicks off with the Div. 3 Pacific University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a non-conference clash. The first home game at the Burnaby Mountain campus is next Saturday Sept. 10th when they host Western Oregon at 2 p.m.

NWL

The 2011 Northwest League baseball season ends for the Vancouver Canadians this weekend. The C’s play the Boise Hawks tonight and Saturday morning in Idaho. The Canadians fell to a league-worst 3-16 on the road in the second half of the season Thursday with a 4-2 loss.

Vancouver was re-assigned RHP Noah Syndergaard from Lansing on Thursday but the six foot five pitcher is not expected to be activated by the Canadians prior to the end of the regular season.
