Vehicles impounded for young drivers caught racing on Hwy 99

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The group of young drivers who were caught when they turned Highway 99 into a racetrack during Wednesday afternoon’s rush hour have been fined. They’ve also had their expensive sports cars impounded.

Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Shirley Bond tells News1130 she hopes the young men’s parents don’t let this slide.

“Everyone wants that kind of behaviour there to be consequences. There is an initial consequence here, which means an impoundment of the vehicle. Of course, we want parents to be part of that education process.”

She says we can all learn from this incident. “We’re hopeful that we can use this as an example and a message to other young drivers and other not-so-young drivers.”

“You need to slow down; you need to pay attention to the laws,” she explains. “Ultimately, you can lose your car for a short time and potentially, you could lose your car — period.”

The drivers were all aged 20 and under. Some were clocked going upwards of 200 km/h.

There were three 2010 Lamborghini Gallardos, a 2007 Ferrari 599, a 2009 Audi R8, a 2012 Nissan GT-R, two 2010 Nissan GT-Rs, two 2010 Maserati Turismos, a 2011 Mercedes SL6, a 2011 Mercedes SLS, and 2005 Aston Martin DB9.
