Steve Nash joins Whitecaps workout

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Whitecaps had a Nash wearing a team jersey again today.

Team co-owner Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns, whose brother Martin once captained the team, joined the players’ workout today at Swangard Stadium where he spoke honestly about the team’s first year in Major League Soccer.

Despite recording just four victories so far this season, Nash says that he sees plenty of positives.

“We’ve got a lot of good players,” said Nash. “We’ve got a great residency program. On top of that we’re moving into a new stadium, and we have the third-highest attendance in the league.”

Nash was also asked about a trying season in which the Whitecaps have had two coaching changes.

“This is a period of transition,” he said. “We have a brand new franchise in a new league, a lot of all new faces on the team so it’s a transition, regardless, so we’ve just thrown more variables into that transition so the guys have handled it outstandingly considering all the changes.”

The 37-year-old Nash called the practise session a great opportunity to get to know the players and “get the temperature of the club.”

The Suns star is hoping that he doesn’t have too much spare time this fall. He says it’s tough to say whether the NBA will be back up and running before Christmas but is hopeful that the league and its players can reach an agreement. The NBA has locked out its players and the start of the season is in jeopardy.
