VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Twelve-thousand full time jobs were lost in this province last month.

Minister of Jobs Pat Bell says Vancouver Island and the gas and oil producing sectors were hit particularly hard. “Vancouver Island concerns me. We’re looking at that closely.”

“There was a job gain in the Lower Mainland, in the Cariboo [and through] the Okanagan. Pretty much Vancouver Island is where we’re looking right now,” he adds.

Meanwhile, the NDP says Premier Christy Clark needs to focus more on jobs. Finance critic Bruce Ralston says the unemployment rate in BC is the highest in Western Canada.

Ralston says the trend is to move from full-time to part-time jobs and short-term contracts. “It’s hard to plan your life and support a family on jobs like that.”

The premier has said jobs are her big focus once MLAs return to the legislature in October.
