Park Board OK’s alcohol on public golf courses

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’re one step closer to cracking a cold one on a public golf course in Vancouver.

The Park Board took over 5 hours to meet and hear from concerned speakers late into the night before approving a change to the liquor licensing on the three courses Monday.

Chair Aaron Jasper says it addresses the fact that many people are already drinking as they play. “The challenge for us is to try to keep an eye on that. A lot of people are already sneaking a beer in, putting their six-pack into the golf bag. So for us, bringing it into the open, it’s a little easier to monitor this.”

The changes passed 6-1 and are expected to take place by the spring. The changes will affect the courses of McCleery, Langara and Fraserview. No changes will take place on the city’s pitch-and-putts.

The board also passed their financial plan through 2014 , which includes a new roof for the Bloedel Conservatory and a First Nation culture centre in the old Stanley Park petting zoo.
