VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two of Chile’s famous 33 rescued miners have made a stop for charity in Vancouver.
The miners spent 69 days trapped underground, and over a few days last October they were systematically pulled one by one to the surface through a drilled tunnel.
Speaking through a translator, Franklin Lobos and Omar Reygadas say they haven’t gotten any compensation from their former employer. “Actually we were only hoping for an apology but they weren’t even capable of doing that.”
They say some of the other miners are struggling with social and financial problems now and despite their fame, many can’t find work.
Most are only qualified to be miners and it’s hard to get a job in the industry in Chile if you’re over 35. “The problem is most of us are old, older than 35. In Chile, if you’re over 35 it’s really hard to get a job in a mine.”
