VIFF opens tonight

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tonight is the opening night of the Vancouver International Film Festival. VIFF is North America’s fifth-largest film festival, both in the number of films shown and audience, with over 150,000 people expected to turn out.

Alan Franey, the festival’s director, says that our festival is the opposite of mainstream Hollywood film fests, but that doesn’t mean Vancouver won’t have its share of celebrities. “The stars here are people like Steve Nash as we’re showing the world premiere of “Nash” the documentary.”

“We’re showing a wonderful film made with some Vancouver roots based on a book by Ronald Wright out of Salt Spring Island. And another one a lot of people will hear about is a Canadian film called “Starbuck” which was one of the hits of the Toronto Film Festival.”

Franey says they whittle down 4,000 possible films to just over 230 feature length films and shorts from more than 80 countries. The Vancouver International Film Festival runs from tomorrow until October 14th.
