Annual Run for the Cure today

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s an event that takes place across Canada and last year raised a record-setting $33 million.  Organizers for the 20th annual Run for the Cure need your help beating breast cancer.

Roughly 10,000 people took part in the annual event in Downtown Vancouver.

Organizer Scott Johnson says last year they raised $2 million in Vancouver alone but they need more money to help reduce the number of deaths caused by breast cancer by the year 2020.

“It’s how many people are affected by this horrible disease and how everyone comes together and it’s just one day that is so positive in a sea full of tragedy.”

Johnson adds that with every passing year, there are more and more survivor shirts.

“‘I’m running for my mom.  I’m running for my sister.  I’m running for my wife.’  You realize how everybody has lost someone or has battled this disease with someone that is so near to their hearts.  And that’s something that is so overwhelming, yet their standing there with a smile on their face, with a feeling of accomplishment because they’re doing something about it.”

A pink bus that is outfitted with information, displays and a team of experts will be there.
