Mayoral candidates take different approach

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One is holding news conferences, the other has posted videos online. Vancouver’s two big mayoral hopefuls are picking different strategies in the early leadup to the November 19th civic election.

“Where is [Gregor Robertson]?  What has he done in the last three years?” asked NPA mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton, standing in front of St. Paul’s Hospital during a news conference today.

She wants to lift height restrictions on the aging facility to let new buildings go higher than eleven storeys, if she is elected mayor.

In the past two weeks, Anton has held similar public announcements, from proposing a review of city bike lanes to pledging to bring in a city streetcar.

“We have what I believe to be a product that people will like.  We’ve got a team that’s fantastic, we have things that we’re planning to do as a new council, a new mayor,” says Anton.

She wants to know where Mayor Gregor Robertson is. “All I know is that he’s been in his office unavailable for comment.  He sends his people out, you never hear from him.  I have no idea what he’s doing.  He doesn’t want to debate.”

Vision Vancouver has posted campaign videos featuring Robertson online and he has been speaking at other media events.

Vision’s Executive Director Ian Baillie says it’s early days in the campaign. “Those plans for the future will come out in October.”

Baillie adds people can expect to see a lot more of Robertson. “I think that Vancouverites expect us to talk about our record but we’re going to also talk about what we’re going to do in the next three years and those platform pieces will be coming out in October.”
