People in Yaletown complaining about BC Place screen

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The bright lights of the big city are a little too bright for some people around the new BC Place. There have been complaints, especially about a big new LED screen at the foot of Robson Street.

The screen at the foot of Robson Street at the Terry Fox Plaza lights up bright for game nights and other events. Some people in the neighbourhood’s residential towers say it’s too bright, and they’ve told City Hall about it.

Steve lives right across from the screen and says it does light up his apartment at night and so do the stadium lights — but that’s part of living in the area. “I also live beside a guy who screams every time the Starbucks truck pulls up to load in the middle of the night. And I’m always screaming at him. Hey, it’s the city; get used to it. That’s what you signed up for.”

“[Is it] light pollution? That’s a bit much,” he adds. “There’s a lot of lights that are worse than that. I think people are bothered that maybe it’s in poor taste.”

BC Place falls in the province’s jurisdiction; it doesn’t need city sign permits. PavCo, the owners, tell the Vancouver Sun they’ve been testing the screen at full brightness; it’ll be toned down except for big game nights.
