Vancouver preschool shut down

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Parents who take their kids to the daycare at Kensington Community Centre need to find a new preschool. The program has been closed down while an investigation gets underway into how two children were able to wander away from the centre.

Vancouver Park Board Chair Aaron Jasper says it’s totally unacceptable. “We’ve suspended the program until we can do a full review and ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place.”

In September, a three-year old wandered away from the centre and was found by a bus driver on Knight Street. “It’s kind of scary, actually,” says one dad. “I’ve got a daughter… I would be concerned if it was my child that was attending there.”

Earlier this year, an eight-year-old boy was left behind at a daycamp on Granville Island.

The Vancouver Park Board essentially acts as a landlord for the daycare. Jasper says their is no timeline for the preschool program to be re-opened. The before and after school programs will run today and tomorrow, but the Park Board hasn’t made any decisions for the future.

There are reports parents had earlier been given letters advising them of upgraded security measures following the incident.

We’re also told everyone at the centre is trying to keep attention away from this story; this morning, there were no notices posted on the facility’s doors. In fact, a big banner advertising preschool space for this fall could still be seen on the side of the building.
