SURREY (NEWS1130) – Drivers may not like it very much, but not everyone is opposed to the increase in Metro Vancouver gas taxes approved by local mayors on Friday. Surrey’s business community is ready for the extra hit at the pump this spring.
Elizabeth Model is with Surrey Downtown Business Improvement Association and says with 1,000 people moving in to the city every month, public transit has to keep up.
“Nobody particularly likes the increase of taxes of any kind for any purpose, but if we want this then we need to pay. And the group collectively decided that it was better for all if we spread it across the board.”
“Everyone has to buy into it and at some point in time you will use transit. Look back to Expo 86, look back to our wonderful Olympics, everybody used transit.”
She adds drivers will benefit from TransLink‘s projects as gridlock is reduced. Model also points out the ultimate goal is for the extra money to go to specific projects and not just general revenue.
