Saxmaniac for mayor

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – He calls himself the Saxmaniac, and he’s one of 12 people wanting to be Vancouver’s next mayor.

You might have already seen, or heard, Darrell Zimmerman playing his saxophone for the Occupy Vancouver crowd, or for Vancouver Canucks fans. “Music is the key to improving our society,” he says.

He’s running for mayor because he senses people are fed up with jet-setting politicians. He’s campaigning for changes on the transit system.

“The whole linchpin of my candidacy is free transit. Transit fees are a tax on the poorest members of society who are doing the most environmentally-friendly activity.”

He points out it’s already been done in Hasselt, Belgium. “They’ve had free transit for 15 years. Tourism is up. People have more money to spend on small items like coffees and pizzas and that.”

Zimmerman isn’t exactly new to the political scene. “In the 2005 civic election, I narrowly lost to Sam Sullivan by about 50,000 votes.”
