With the 2011 National Poppy Campaign gearing up for another year, Governor General David Johnston received the first symbolic poppy Wednesday, at a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
“It is an honour for me to receive the first poppy in this year’s campaign,” he says. “A poppy is a symbol that people across Canada, and even around the world, recognize, respect and understand.”
Patricia Vargo, Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion, presented the poppy in front of dozens of local veterans and Royal Canadian Legion members.
“The wearing of this symbol demonstrates that Canadians remember all who made the extreme sacrifice from our first battle fought to our most recent fallen in Afghanistan,” she says.
Each year, about 18 million poppies are distributed in communities across Canada.
Poppies will be available to the general public starting Friday, October 28.
