VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new Stats Canada report says more people in this country are dying from cancer than heart disease.

Cancer being the new leading cause of death does not come as a surprise to Dr. Andrew Coldman with the BC Cancer Agency.

He says the disease has been the leading cause of death in this province for the last decade and rates are climbing because of an aging population.

“The numbers are not unexpected,” Coldman says. “The increase in the numbers is primarily due to changes in demography and increases in the population.”

He says a reduction in the number of deaths from heart disease, which used to be the leading cause of death, is also a big factor.

Coldman adds cancer rates and the mortality rate in this province remain the lowest in the nation.
