Metro Vancouver housing starts rise

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Housing starts in Metro Vancouver rose in October compared to a year earlier, entirely due to a surge in condo construction.

A federal agency says 1,722 homes begun in the Vancouver census area last month, an increase of 19 per cent.  Although starts on single-detached houses fell 10 per cent, condo starts surged by 30 per cent.  Most of the action was in Surrey, Langley, and Burnaby according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

CMHC analyst Robyn Adamache says “multi-family construction… led the way during the first 10 months of the year” with most of the construction happening in Vancouver, Richmond, and Surrey.
