VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You may see them in a puddle or on the ground somewhere when they should be sitting right over your heart: The crimson lapel pin you wear before Remembrance Day that quite often falls off and gets lost.
Inga Kruse with the BC Royal Canadian Legion says it happens to her, too. But she has a solution. “I take a piece of eraser and put it on the back of the pin so that it doesn’t poke them and it prevents them from coming off.”
Other ways to make the poppy stay put include using jewellery.
“What some people do is they take an earring and they take the front of it and make it black [then they] put it though the middle and put an earring back in the back of it,” says Kruse.
She’s seen people poke the pin itself through the plastic flower, but tells us there are no guarantees that method will prevent it getting lost.
“It doesn’t seem to stabilize it very well,” she explains, adding some people stick a Canada pin through the poppy, but that’s frowned upon.
