Burnaby pipeline ruling handed down

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A judge has rubber stamped a plea agreement for three companies involved in a dramatic oil pipeline rupture in Burnaby four years ago.

Trans Mountain Pipeline, RF Binnie and Associates, and B. Cusano Contracting will have to pay roughly $150,000 each to a habitat conservation group, along with a small fine.  Trans Mountain is paying a further $100,000 fine.

The companies each plead guilty to one count of polluting the environment.  There were originally 26 charges.

Crude oil spewed up to 15 metres in the air for half an hour on the afternoon of July 24th, 2007.  It affected more than four dozen homes near Inlet Drive.  A Transportation Safety Board report found the companies didn’t have an accurate map before they started digging.
