Polygamy decision comes down tomorrow

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If polygamy becomes legalized in Canada tomorrow it will open a whole new can of worms when it comes to immigration and the definition of marriage.  News1130 is speaking with a lawyer who has been following the case very closely.

“It is really difficult to anticipate what the judge is going to do.  There is a lot of evidence and a lot of arguments on both sides,” says Ron Skolrood with Lawson Lundell.

He says there is the potential for people in plural marriages to claim religious persecution if they don’t immigrate to Canada

“Can someone legitimately say that my family is comprised of a number of spouses, things like pension law where there are laws around survivors and who is entitled to pension and healthcare benefits and family law issues, things like that.”

The government has argued multiple marriage is harmful to women and children and must be banned.

News1130’s Dan Burritt will have the ruling shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
